The story began with a Florida Today newspaper article dated December 28th, 2006, gangs and violence are two issues that plague the citizens of the south Melbourne community. In response to that disturbing headline, at that time the District 3 Brevard County Commissioner Helen Voltz worked with the Melbourne Police Community Relations Council Ad-Hoc Committee which consists Yvonne Minus, Leonard Ross, Carl Finerson, James Minus, Joseph McNeil, Bennie Hopkins Sr., City Commissioner for District 3 Kathy Meehan, Jan Conrad, were a grassroots group of committed community leaders determined to impact change. Over many months, they gathered frequently to discuss strategies and sought answers in a collective effort to eradicate the root causes of violence and drugs that was cancerous to our young people.
The efforts of the Ad-Hoc committee were not to be stopped, in October 2007, a crime conference was held at Stone Middle School to continue to assist the at-risk youth in the community. Many speakers came from around the country to speak to the youth. The following accepted to speak at the first Crime Conference:
To engage all students with the desire to educate and train them with life skills that will propel
them to make choices that will become productive citizens. The STEM program has become
our vehicle of choice to eliminate social bullying, gun safety and other perils of violence that will
assist the student to make better decisions. A productive mine will not have time to be involved in wrongdoings
